Abstract:

Introduction: Pityrosporosis is a prevalent superficial fungal infection of the skin caused by Malassezia SPP, which is a part of normal skin flora. This organism is a lipophilic and lipid dependent yeast which transforms in to a pathogenic mycelial form under specific conditions. Considering the previous studies, there may be a relation between Blood lipids and pityrosporosis, a prospective study was undertaken over a 12 months period in the Departments of Mycology, Dermatology and Biochemistry, Emam Reza Hospital, Mashhad.Materials and Methods: The population of study was randomly selected as the following groups:Group 1: 50 patients suffering from severe pityrosporosis.Group 2: 50 individuals with negative direct smear for Pityrosporum ovale.Group 3: 50 persons with high level of cholesterol & triglyceride in their Blood serum examination.Group 4: 50 individuals with normal level of cholesterol & triglyceride in their Blood serum examination.A questionnaire was completed for each individual. Direct stained skin smear (methylen blue) & Blood serum examination for cholesterol & triglyceride were performed for all 4 groups by RA -1000 system. Results: The results showed that:1. In 28% of Patients with pityrosporosis, total cholesterol levels were higher than normal which showed a significant difference in comparison with the control group.2. In 22% of patients, triglyceride levels were higher than normal which showed a significant difference in comparison with the control group.3. In 32% of patients, LDL-C levels were higher than normal which showed a significant difference in comparison with the control group.4. There was no significant relationship between HDL-C levels and the group suffering from pityrosporosis .5. In those patients suffering only from hyperlipidemia, pityrosporosis was uncommon. Conclusion: On the basis of statistical analysis. it is concluded that there is a relation between pityrosporosis and Blood levels of total cholesterol and triglyceride LDL-C, therefore control of Blood levels of lipids possibly can be effective in prophylaxis & treatment of pityrosporosis.

Abstract:

Introduction: The right use of Blood is necessary because of the high cost of correct Blood screening, Blood grouping, and cross match. The purpose of this study is to evaluate the rate of the reserved and cross matched Blood before elective surgeries which were done in Bahman 22nd Hospital. It also aims at evaluating the standard guideline for ordering Blood.Materials and Methods: This is a retrospective study from 1380 to 1388 that evaluates evaluating 6145 files of the patients hospitalized in 22 Bahman 22nd Hospital for surgery during the years of 1380 to 1388. The elective operations include General surgery, Gynecology, orthopedic, ENT, Urology and Neurosurgery. The number of patients, the number of reserved and cross matched units and the number of transfused units was recorded for each group of patients collected in each groups. Finally, the number of reserved Blood units in that period of time and in each group was compared with the standard guideline. Also the number of transfused Blood units was evaluated. The ratio of cross matched to transfused Blood units lower than 2.5 was considered as standard. And The obtained data were analyzed, using with SPSS.Results: A total of 1557 Blood units of Blood were reserved for 772 patients.1305 units (66.47%) were cross matched, but just 126 units (8.1%) were transfused. The effective factors in increasing the possibility of transfusion were the ages<20 & >80 years old, Hb £ 12, the type of surgery and the surgeon. Although after the application of the guidelines in1385, there was 64.44% decrease in the rate of cross matching rate due to the decrease in the number of patients who were cross matched, but the average of cross matched units for each patient did not change. The total of C/T index of the hospital decreased from 14.1 to 3.7.Conclusion: The appropriate correct Blood reserving can decrease the unnecessary Blood reserves, lower the pressure on Blood banking centers and prevent Blood wastage.

Abstract:

Background & Objective: The role of circulating lipids in the pathogenesis of ischemic stroke remains unclear despite 3 decades of research. Since ischemic stroke is one of the important causes of death or disability in the world. Finding its risk factors can play a crucial role in health interferences. This study was conducted to investigate the relationship between Blood lipids and ischemic stroke. Methods: This was a case-control study conducted in 2002. The case group were patients who were definitely diagnosed to have ischemic stroke for the first time. An equal number of control subjects (with the same age and sex) were selected from other hospital wards. These two groups were compared in terms of the Blood lipids. The collected data were analyzed using SPSS software (release 12) and statistical methods such as ANOVA and multivariate regression. Results: In this research 132 cases were compared with equal number of control subjects. The subjects in both groups were 64.1 years old on average. The mean level of total cholesterol was significantly higher in case group (p=0.001). The mean level of Triglycerides had no significant difference in two groups. Conclusions: Regarding the findings of the present research, offering strategies to lower the chlestrol level through primary prevention as well as drug interferences especially in the groups with other risk factors of stroke, seems to have a significant role in the prevention of ischemic stroke.

Abstract:

Background: We aimed to investigate the effects of occupational stress on Blood lipids, Blood glucose and immune function of doctors. Methods: In 2017, 1291 doctors (565 males, 726 females) in The First Hospital Affiliated with Harbin Medical University (Harbin, China) were enrolled based on the principle of convenience of sampling and cluster sam-pling. Questionnaires were used to investigate demographic characteristics and occupational stress related fac-tors. Level of glycated hemoglobin was detected by immunoturbidimetric method. Concentration of triglycer-ide was determined by glycerol phosphate oxidase end point method. Total cholesterol concentration in serum was determined by total cholesterol oxidase end point method. Concentration of serum immuno-globulin was detected by immunoturbidimetry. Results: Levels of glycated hemoglobin and triglyceride in high tension group were higher than those in the low tension group. Levels of IgG and IgM in high tension group were lower than those in low tension group. The risk of elevated glycated hemoglobin levels in > 50-yr-old age group was higher than that of the =<35-yr-old age group. Those in the high coping strategy group was higher in the low coping strategy group. The risk of elevated total cholesterol levels in drinkers is 1. 158 times that of non-drinkers. The risk of IgG concentra-tion reduction in smokers was 0. 428 times that of non-smokers. The risk of a decrease in IgA concentration in doctors with good sleep quality is 1. 527 times that of those with poor sleep quality. Conclusion: Occupational stress can lead to increased Blood lipids and sugar levels as well suppression of immune function in doctors.

Abstract:

Low density lipoprotein (LDL) is known as a risk factor for atherosclerosis. Cholesterol metabolism related enzymes are under effects of thyroid hormones, and obvious changes are observed in hypothyroid patients. This study aimed to find out the probable physiologic relation between lipid levels and these hormones. A total of 666 (589 women and 77 men) healthy adults with no clinical evidence of thyroid disease were enrolled in this study. Blood samples were taken for measurement of T3, T4, TSH, cholesterol and triglycerides. Mean of age and weight was 40±12.9 years and 59±12 kilograms, respectively. The mean of cholesterol level and triglycerides was 189±61 mg/dl and 145±88 mg/dl, respectively. A significant (P<0.05) correlation was observed between cholesterol with T3 (r=-0.29), T4 (r=-0.37) and TSH (r=0.33). A similar correlation between triglycerides and T3 (r=-0.21), T4 (r=-0.26) and TSH (r=0.24) was noticed. It seems that even in healthy individuals without thyroid disease, the level of serum lipids and thyroid hormones are related inversely, ie with an increase in thyroid hormones, lipid level decline.

Abstract:

The objective of this research is to determine the effect of consumtion of ginger on Blood lipids of the hypercholestrolemia patients who referred to clinics at Shaheed Modarres Hospital at Tehran. This double-blind clinical trial was conducted in 23 subjects with hypercholestrolemia by using before-after treatment method. The subjects referring to clinics at Shahid Modarres Hospital were selected non-randomly by convenience sampling. All patients were given ginger powder capsules 3 times a day with a total amount of 400 mg over four weeks. After one-week washout, placebo capsules were administered with similar condition. Blood samples were collected and examined at the beginning and at the end of fourth and ninth weeks of the study for serum total cholesterd, LDL cholesterol, HDL cholesterol and triglycerides after 12-14 hours at fasting. In addition, 24 hours recall questionnerie of food intake was completed at the beginning and at the end of the study. Dietary consumption of ginger powder significantly increased total serum cholesterol and LDL cholesterol. There was no significant change in HDL, cholesterol, triglycerides, and LDL/HDL ratio. Although there was a continual decrease in TG/HDL ratio, it was not statistically significant. In spite of the fact that consumption of ginger powder can reduce TG/HDL ratio as a significant risk factor in myocardial infarction, some findings are unexpected. Thus, further studies with different dose and duration of consumptions are recommended.
